Throughout NFL history, there have been plenty of clownish figures. Not long ago, Rob Gronkowski played the role of the league’s court jester. This tradition stretches back through Pat McAfee and Chad Ochocinco, past Jared Allen and John Randle, all the way to Jim McMahon, Steve McMichael, John Riggins, Alex Karras, and Billy “White Shoes” Johnson.
There may be something deeply insightful to say about the need for lighthearted characters in a sport defined by militaristic discipline and a seriousness that approaches self-mockery. But for now, what matters is how we view these chosen entertainers.
